A demon unchained. A friend in crisis. An island rent in two. Gava thought she’d captured a prize; she instead unleashed ruin.
This mammoth track – by far the longest I’ve written, and the most technically complex to boot – was scored live to the narration of the final epic scene of the climactic chapter. It was a daunting challenge for someone who’d never scored to anything live before, but I wanted to see whether I was up to it. I think I can say, based on the reaction of the audiobook’s author, that I was.

FOLLOW ALONG —
(Background: Twilight has been trying to keep The Other, a parasitical magical entity in her head, at bay for most of the story, but in the preceding chapter she gets imprisoned by the griffon mercenary Gava. In desperation, she lets The Other take control of her body so that they – aided by its greatly enhanced magical power – can escape. Once free, The Other unleashes devastation. Before long they spot Gava and chase after her, and The Other catches her right as the music starts.)
0:00 – The M5 run after Twilight to help her
0:24 – Twilight/The Other wrecks the place and pummels Gava
1:09 – The M5 try to calm Twilight, but The Other rebuffs them
2:53 – The Other rips the island apart, creating a huge chasm
3:26 – The Other readies to drop Gava to her death
3:42 – The M5 beg her not to
4:16 – Pinkie leaps across the chasm and latches onto Twilight
4:26 – Twilight slowly come to (and accidentally drops Gava)
5:13 – The estate owner arrives, surveys the ruined land, orders his troops to shoot Twilight
5:33 – The troops open fire
5:52 – The Other takes control & unleashes a blast of magic, throwing everyone back and accidentally tossing Pinkie into a tree, snapping her spine
6:13 – Everyone reacts in horror
6:43 – Enraged, Twilight starts fighting with The Other for control; The Other says Twilight would just get them killed, and only needs her to lose control of her emotions again to take back control anyway
9:32 – Twilight calms herself and wrestles The Other into a mental stalemate
10:47 – The Other gives up control for now; Twilight tells Applejack she’s back, but not to follow her
11:42 – Twilight lets herself drop through the chasm, holding AJ’s stare until she plunges into the ocean far below and disappears
